Environmental Innovation

As long as we are using oil to power our lives and improve quality of life around the world, we must develop it in a way that benefits us economically and is environmentally responsible.

Innovation is about bringing together new ideas to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of a technology or process resulting in a positive impact on society. Canadians have a long and successful track record in applying innovation to address energy, environmental and social challenges, including oil sands production.

Canada's Oil Sands Innovation Alliance

Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) is an alliance of oil sands producers focused on accelerating the pace of improvement in environmental performance in Canada’s oil sands through collaborative action and innovation.

Through COSIA, member companies capture, develop and share the most innovative approaches and best thinking to improve environmental performance in the oil sands, focusing on four Environmental Priority Areas (EPAs) – tailings, water, land and greenhouse gases. COSIA’s members represent almost 90 per cent of the oil sands production in Canada.

Innovating to Compete

New techniques are critical to developing the oil sands and addressing environmental concerns. Canada's oil sands industry is one of the biggest investors in research and development to identify new, better ways of protecting the environment.
