For information on what the oil sands industry is doing, go to “What We’re Doing – Environment and Economy”.
The oil sands now represent half of western Canada’s oil output, or approximately 45 percent of Canada’s total oil supply. Canada has the second-largest proved oil reserves in the world, but only because of the oil sands.
Global oil demand is predicted to rise by about 35 percent by 2030 according to the
International Energy Agency. Alternative energy technology is advancing on several fronts, but because world energy demand is growing quickly, alternatives cannot replace oil. Energy forecasters predict that we will need all types of energy to help meet the world’s needs.
On the other hand, it’s clear that a fossil fuel based economy has very serious environmental consequences.
How can we balance between the need to ensure affordable energy security and the need to protect the ecosystems that sustain us? Tell us what you think. Tell us what you think.
