Hey all

CAPP just released a new oil sands video today called "Canada's Oil Sands: Come see for yourself..."

It’s a fifteen minute overview that CAPP has worked on since last fall.
Learn what the oil sands are and how they’re developed as well as what’s being done to protect the environment, pioneer technology, reclaim land, engage communities, and provide economic opportunities.

Wow, What a great start. Great movie. I hope CAPP is working on ways to get this out to large large number's of people.

Thanks for the positive feedback. We do have a plan for broad distribution and we're at the beginning of that process now. Of course we're always open to suggestions or new ideas regarding potential audiences for the video and ways we can get it to them.

Its a nice video, but addresses few or none of the issues i see facing society today and tomarrow.

There was also a number of PR tricks used:
- They refer to the oilsands as sustainable.
- They imply the *only* reclaimed area was a tailings pond when it was not. They do this by talking about tailings, and then showing the reclaimed land saying this land was part of the first mine. That does not mean tailings, it could have been a parking lot. But people will automatically think tailings.

Not sure I agree that the video implies that the reclaimed areas were once tailings ponds – I didn’t get that. That said, it is true that no tailings ponds have yet been fully reclaimed. Many of the ponds are, in fact, still in use recycling process water. Among those that are no longer in operation, Suncor’s Pond 1 is planned to be reclaimed to a solid surface, suitable for replanting this year. You can see the video describing the process.

Going forward, we’ve got plans in place (as do other producers) to speed the release of water from other tailings materials so that reclamation can occur more quickly. We plan to put about half a billion dollars into new technologies and processes this year alone for what we call Tailings Reduction Operations or TRO (a very creative name that could only be dreamed up by scientists and engineers ;-). The process is described in this video link.

Excellent video, but it could use a couple of improvements: (1) Nowhere does it show how dirty and messy the raw surface oil sands are, and how they can pollute waterways from natural runoff. (2) There's not much sign of what the oil is used for other than somebody riding on a jet-ski. Isn't oil used for making useful chemicals and plastics, for example?

And this website, although well designed, doesn't have any nice photos to snazz it up. There's lots of good images that could be used to present a better image of the oil sands area, but the website itself is dull and colourless. Otherwise mostly you're on the right track!

Thanks for producing such a video. Many of us need to learn and know about Oil Sands development and processes.
