More layoffs at Suncor

Layoffs are never good -- but it's particularly difficult given that it's not exactly open season on hiring in the oilpatch these days. I've been trying to obtain a job there for months. The combination of yet another study ranking Alberta's natural gas shale assets as the least competitive in North America, along with the environmental noise plaguing the oilsands, means Canada's oilpatch is in caught in a grim mood in which adding to the workforce is not at the top of the list like it was two years ago.The layoffs have been tied to job overlaps between Suncor and Petro-Canada, asset sales and diminished need as the two operations become one.

There seems to be alot of issues surrounding Fort McMurray and the enviroment. Those 2 words cannot co exist in the same sentance. The work and the way things are being done in this region are absolutely disgusting. Our poor mother nature. One day she is gonna fight back and when she does it will be too late to even think about what we can do to help...

Most od the majors have been through round one of layoffs and I believe unemployment will remain high for some time to come. Anyone holding real estate as an investment may want to re-think the future of Alberta's economy. $400,000 starter homes may be a thing of the past.

Typing coherent comments into this tiny box is a pain in the ass. Am I missing something here or is this the only way to post a comment?
